How I Honor Forgotten Poems
I am always incredibly frustrated when a word or a line or even a full poem is lost. This can often be simply because of moving, getting a new phone, and countless things. But I find most of the time, it is the poems that I never quite get onto paper that stick with me.
Whenever a new line or poem pops up in my head but I do not have ready access to my phone or a paper, I will repeat it over and over again until I can write it down. Unfortunately, sometimes that means I am interrupted mid-task or otherwise get distracted, and I lose the whole line. I will try my hardest to write something similar, but it never quite hits the spot like the (forgotten or lost) original.
I will often write a poem about how it feels to lose a poem when this happens. Here is one of them.
These words in my brain
Sometimes sound like cats
Begging for their treats
When I open the cabinet.
I’m sorry I’m distracted,
Or a little frustrated,
Irritated;
I can’t hold back
My agitation
It’s just exacerbating
When the phrasing
So carelessly slips
Between my brain cells
And disappears
In the abyss of best lines
I always forget.
