Well, Poetry and Therapy
Over the years, I have tried many things to treat my complex PTSD. Nothing seemed to work, but I now realize that one cannot heal in the midst of trauma. If the trauma is still ongoing, one can’t properly heal.
Once my life settled down a bit, I started diving headfirst into trauma work. I love DBT to help with my interpersonal relationships and DBT gave me the tools to keep myself grounded. One on one with my therapist, I have found brainspotting to be the most helpful form of trauma work for me.
GoodTherapy describes brainspotting as a newer type of trauma therapy that aims to allow people to access, process, and overcome their trauma. They continue by saying the following:
“According to therapist and creator David Grand, the direction in which people look or gaze can affect the way they feel. During brainspotting, therapists help people position their eyes in ways that enable them to target sources of negative emotion. With the aid of a pointer, trained brainspotting therapists slowly guide the eyes of people in therapy across their field of vision to find appropriate “brainspots,” with a brainspot being an eye position that activates a traumatic memory or painful emotion.
